OLS Parish

FIRST HOLY EUCHARIST / COMMUNION

The Sacrament of the Eucharist

The reception of First Holy Eucharist is part of the Christian initiation. Those who have been raised to the dignity of the royal priesthood by Baptism participate with the whole community in the Lord’s own sacrifice by means of the Eucharist. A Priest presides over this Sacrament. The formation process requires two years and ideally begins in the 1st grade of school. However, a child can begin the process at any time, but recognizing the two year requirement is necessary.

Requirements:

·        Household is registered and active within the parish

·        Child has been baptized as Catholic

·        Child regularly attends all classes and retreats beginning in the 1st grade

·        Children are prepared for this sacrament and reconciliation through work at home with their parents and a retreat.

·        They must be in at least their second year of religious education through CRE classes, a Catholic School, or a diocesan-approved Catholic Home Schooling program.

·        Reception of First Eucharist takes place during the Easter Season (April – May) during the normally scheduled weekend masses.

Adults who wish to celebrate their First Reception of Communion will need to participate in a formation process. This formation occurs during the year in six week intervals.

Requirements:

·        Adult is registered and active in the parish

·        Is baptized as a Catholic

·        Attends all formation classes

·        Has no impediments to the Sacrament (e.g. within an invalid marriage)
