Sacrament of Baptism

The Sacrament of Baptism

Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit, and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission: Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration through water in the word. “Catechism of the Catholic Church 1213”

The celebration of Baptism follows different protocols based upon the age of the person to be baptized. Baptism for infants are for those up to the age of 7 years. After the age of 7, the child will follow a different process, likewise those over the age of 18 and out of High School. Please scroll down the page to read the policies.

Baptism Class is required for those families wishing to have their infants or young children baptized. We are offering these classes on the 2nd Monday of each monthGodparents are also encouraged to attend.

Please call the office at 775-323-6894 to sign up and to be sent the Zoom link.

If you are an ADULT who wishes to be Baptized as Catholic, we welcome you into the OCIA process (formerly RCIA). This will require a 2 year process of catechesis and formation, after which persons are Baptized, Confirmed and receive first communion at the Easter Vigil.  Contact Karen Totten if interested. POLICY FOR INFANT BAPTISMS (up to 7 years of age)

We celebrate the baptism of a child in great joy with the family and parish. Parents need to understand that baptism is also a serious responsibility. They must know that through baptism they promise to raise the child in the faith, which means they will attend mass on a regular basis, they will educate their children in the faith, and they will help them to prepare for future sacraments, especially first communion, reconciliation and confirmation.

It is the role of the Pastor to ensure the parents and godparents are prepared to raise the children in the faith.  We prepare parents and godparents for this responsibility with the following:

  • Parents of the children are expected to be active members of the parish
    • the family attends mass each weekend
    • and contribute in some manner to the ministry of the parish
  • Parents, and ideally godparents, will take a baptism preparation class that is offered on the 2nd Monday of the month Please call the office at 775-323-6894 to sign up and to be sent the Zoom link
  • After that class parents will meet with the team to complete paperwork, discuss the significance of Baptism answer any other questions and schedule the baptism
  • If a parent wishes to baptize a child at Our Lady of the Snows, but attends another parish either within the diocese of Reno or another diocese, a letter of permission from the pastor of that parish must be sent to Our Lady Snows Parish before the date of baptism can be set
  • Godparents for Baptism must fulfill the following:
    • Be baptized Catholic
    • Celebrated first communion and confirmation
    • If married, must be married in the Catholic Church (Single persons are allowed to be godparents)
    • Godparents from another parish will need a letter from their pastor stating that they are eligible
    • Non-Catholics are not eligible to be Godparents, but may participate in the ceremony
  • Parents do not need to be married within the church, however this is an opportunity to consider having a civil marriage convalidated
  • Baptisms will be celebrated during the Sunday Masses throughout the year.
    •  Baptisms are generally not celebrated during Lenten season

POLICY FOR BAPTISMS for CHILDREN ABOVE 7 YEARS OF AGE

The Catholic Church requires all children above the age of 7 to be part of the OCIA (Order of Christian Initiation of Adults). We celebrate this at Easter, and the Pastor presides over this celebration.
